On course for the future

The great importance of tourism in Salzburg is the basis for confidence in the future. Trends in the domestic economy and the guarantee of prosperity, work and income in Land Salzburg will in future also continue to be largely dependent on developments in tourism. The course has to be set for the future: the landscape, unspoilt countryside and a healthy environment remain the most important capital for the future of tourism in Salzburg. This capital has to be preserved so that coming generations can earn a living from tourism. For that, it is necessary to offer, for example, new transport solutions better adapted to the environment and to develop those already existing, or not to increase the number of beds. In order to secure in the long term jobs and training positions in the Salzburg tourism and leisure industry and to create new jobs, Land Salzburg has an economic policy of annually providing a considerable amount of money for specific measures to promote employment.

In future the principle “together we are stronger” has to be adopted more intensively than in the past. The number of competitors in tourism is continuing to grow worldwide and what Salzburg has to offer appears relatively small and more difficult to recognise. Responses have to be made to such developments by even greater cooperation, increased joint efforts and intensified attempts to find more common ground. This applies to companies in one place as well as to international partnerships between tourism enterprises. Tourist associations will have to be merged to create marketing communities, the federal provinces must co-operate with one another and joint actions are necessary between various branches which are all dependent on developments in tourism. Furthermore, it is a policy of the Salzburg tourist authorities to ensure that tourism in Salzburg remains under the management of Salzburgers. Local inhabitants should above all benefit from the exploitation of the Austrian landscape for tourism and find work and income from this. The tourism policy must in future continue to feel committed to all these principles.

Tourism Strategy

The economic guidelines devised by Land Salzburg in 2003 establish the goals concerning tourism policy and outline the aims for the period 2003 to 2010. In response to this a group of experts are now elaborating a Tourism Strategy for Land Salzburg for 2010 to ensure that the right tourism policies are implemented in the coming years. The principle idea of the strategy is to safeguard and develop further the position of Salzburg in a competitive tourism situation, as well as adjusting to new market circumstances. The strategy paper is therefore intended as a specific achievement indicator with the aim of positioning Salzburg as an all-year-round destination by the year 2015.
