The year 1896, when the “Tourism Association in Land Salzburg” was founded, is especially important in the history of domestic tourism. However, even before this time, there had been many activities in all parts of the land that aimed to promote this new and interesting branch of the economy. Consequently, already by the turn of the century, Salzburg could be satisfied by its achievements in tourism. Nevertheless, the First World War brought the “golden age of the Sommerfrische” (summer holidays in the country) to an abrupt end. After the war it was necessary to find a new focus. Salzburg then benefited from the founding of the Salzburg Festival which soon became not only a cultural but also a social and touristic highlight. However, after the end of the Second World War a fresh start again had to be made. It was not until 1955 that Salzburg began to experience a boom in international tourism, and in particular from the 1960s, winter tourism was especially important in stimulating powerful growth. With the founding in 1986 of the Salzburg Regional Tourist Association a new era began in the organisation of domestic tourism. Furthermore, with the opening up of Eastern Europe from 1990, new impulses were generated for tourism in Salzburg. Meanwhile guests from Central and Eastern European Countries account for more than one million overnight stays.
