Sights to see in the city and surrounding land

The most frequented sights in the city and land of Salzburg are the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, and the Krimml waterfalls (at 380 metres the highest waterfalls in Europe) and they have been awarded the Europe diploma. The Grossglockner High Alpine Road was opened in 1935 and annually about 868,000 people “conquer” it. The symbol of the city of Salzburg, Hohensalzburg Fortress, was visited in 2005 by about 890,000 people, the Krimml waterfalls by 370,000. Other popular activities are a boat ride on Lake Wolfgang, a visit to Mozart’s Birthplace, Hellbrunn Palace, Natural History Museum in the Haus der Natur. The open-air heritage museum at Großgmain or the salt mines of Hallein also attract high numbers of visitors. The Tauernkraftwerk in Kaprun with its reservoirs and dams for the hydroelectric power station is another of the most popular tourist attractions in Land Salzburg, as well as the Giant Ice World near Werfen.
