Charming lakes in the Flachgau

The most northerly part of Land Salzburg is Flachgau but in truth it is not as flat as its name suggests (flach = flat). Areas with mountains and hills, meadows, among them forests, lakes, small or large and an incredible variety of ponds and marshland, form the character of its landscape. During the Ice Age, the icy masses of the Salzach glaciers underwent a deplacement in the form of fingers toward the north, between Bavaria and Salzburg, forming the pre-alpine landscape of Flachgau. In this slightly undulating moraine landscape the Flyschberge (Flysch mountains) stand out at a height of over 1000 metres. Hochgitzen, Buchberg, Tannberg, Irrsberg, the Grosse Plaike, Kolomannsberg and Haunsberg are some of the names of the mountains. Several truly lovely lakes go back to the Ice Age, for example, Wallersee, Obertrumersee, Niedertrumersee, Grabensee, the lakes Egelseen, Fuschlsee and Wolfgangsee.
