Salzburg's presidents in the Second Republic |
|
The destiny of Salzburg during the Second Republic was guided by the presidents Adolf Schemel, Albert Hochleitner, Josef Rehrl, Josef Klaus, Hans Lechner, Wilfried Haslauer and Hans Katschthaler. It was during Katschthaler’s term of office that the population voted in favour of Austria joining the EU. Austria became a member on 1 January 1995, a decision with far-reaching consequences for the land. After the resignation of Hans Katschthaler, Franz Schausberger was elected the new president on 24 April 1996 by the Salzburg parliament. Three years later the Salzburg parliament confirmed him in this function. President Franz Schausberger has brought about the greatest reform in the Salzburg regional constitution since it came into existence. The changes in the constitution were so serious that a plebiscite had to be held. The new 1999 constitutional law for the Land has made fundamental changes to the system of government that had been in force from 1921 in Salzburg. Previously the proportional system for the composition of the regional government was valid, since the start of the legislative period 1999/2004 the government is formed according to a free majority system. In its constituent meeting on 28 April 2004 the Salzburg regional parliament elected Mag. Gabi Burgstaller (SPÖ) as President of Land Salzburg - for the first time a member of the Social Democrats and as the first female President. The new Salzburg regional constitution is regarded as the most modern in Austria. |
