High status for education
|
Land Salzburg is a centre of education and training. The land's capital Salzburg can look back on a centuries-old tradition as a university city. In 1622 the university was opened in a ceremony by its founder Prince-archbishop Paris Lodron, whose name it still bears nowadays. However, it was not until 1962 that it was re-opened as a university with full status after years of changeable fortunes and a struggle lasting over 150 years. The four faculties - natural sciences, the humanities, theology and law are divided into about 70 institutes. Don’t forget the Mozarteum and beginning in 2003 the Paracelsus Private Medical University. City, Land and the Republic have signed letters of intent to realise the University Park in Nonntal. The buildings of the University of Salzburg make their mark on the architecture of the city. Besides the architecturally particularly successful new building of the Faculty of Sciences in Freisaal, the beautifully restored buildings adapted for their new function in the old town centre - which was declared part of the world’s cultural heritage in 1997 - have made Salzburg University one of the most beautiful and attractive in the world. A fact not to be forgotten is that the University of Salzburg is a major economic factor. More than 2,100 employees and over 13,000 students are registered at the university.

Salzburg has a total of 433 primary, secondary and schools for children with special needs, high schools, vocational schools and secondary and higher schools specialising in training for an occupation. In addition there are a number of further education possibilities in the field of business and vocational institutes; new forms of education, such as polytechnic universities and specialist academies and not least the many companies where apprentices can learn their trade in practice. There are four courses of study on offer at present in Salzburg at the polytechnic universities providing a practice-oriented training at university level. In Kuchl there is the study course in timber technology and timber industry and in the Techno-Z in Salzburg five courses are available which concentrate in particular on media, information and communication technologies, tourism and digital media. Other polytechnic university projects are planned. The Institute of Computer Sciences of the University of Salzburg has also been established in the Techno-Z and this offers students a practice-oriented training. |

Land Salzburg is constantly aiming to make investments for the future in the spheres of education and communication. For instance, the project known as the Salzburg Educational Network has been set up and completed with the aim of linking all educational institutions in Salzburg to an efficient data network. Schools, libraries, adult education centres and other institutions are given the possibility through the offer made by the land to use the Internet (and from the year 2000), following the slogan: Internet access in every school. Information about Land Salzburg itself is available on the Internet. The range of Internet services of Land Salzburg can be called up on the address www.salzburg.gv.at and on over 30,000 pages presents a multitude of various offers and is constantly being expanded. For instance every citizen has access to the documents currently under discussion in the regional parliament; news can be obtained from the regional government and the latest reports are available daily from the regional press office. Job applications can also be called up and many other things via the server. The Internet offer provided by Land Salzburg is used by residents of Austria and increasingly international guests visit the Internet pages of Land Salzburg. |
